Questions have always been my love language
Even as a child in my mouth was crowded
With crooked teeth, too big for my face
And one question could root itself in a blossom into a million whys
I went quickly to silence, my tongue
Because in my home
Questions disintegrated at the welcome mat
And shooed away with hostility and judgement
Questions equated to stupidity
For having a question
For not knowing the answer
In my home, I learned silence as well as i learned my alphabet
I learned my words were embraced inside my notebook
Going up buring my questions
Made the resurrection as an adult that much sweeter
Perhaps that’s why i’m drawn to people who open their hands
Before i open my mouth
Those who fill their plates, suckle the bones, and ask for seconds
Because a question me is not more than curiosity
It’s love
It’s a want to know
Who you are?
Why you are
What shaped you?
To know there’s always more worth discovering
A question to me is the deepest way I know how to love someone
